The Paradox of the Age of AI: Grasping Technology, Throwing Away Divine Guidance

A painful complaint came from the mouth of the noblest human being, Muhammad SAW, which Allah immortalized in the Al-Qur’an Surah Al-Furqan verse 30: “O my Lord, indeed my people have made this Al-Qur’an something that is thrown away (mahjura).” Today, in the midst of the frenetic revolution of artificial intelligence (AI), the complaints of the nabawi fourteen centuries ago feel even more heart-wrenching and relevant. We live in a tragic paradox: modern humans are racing to pursue the artificial intelligence they themselves created with great admiration, but at the same time, they are widely discarding the Holy Bible as the only futuristic road map that guides the direction of their evolution so as not to get lost.
In fact, if we take a moment to look with a clear conscience, the Quran has never lagged behind the times. It is not merely a historical artifact, but a living “blueprint,” charting every chapter of the human intellect’s journey with divine love.
A Divine Roadmap in the Evolution of Reason
Our long intellectual journey did not begin in Silicon Valley, but rather with a command of light in the Cave of Hira. This was the foundation of the “Print Era,” where human civilization was built on literacy. When the first revelation came down, “Read in the name of your Lord… Who taught (mankind) with the pen…” (Quran 96:1-5), Allah was laying the first stone of our intellectual structure. Without this “Iqra” foundation, humanity would never have reached the civilization we have today. The innate drive to continually increase knowledge then led us to leap into the “Search Era.” The internet has become a vast ocean of digital manifestations of Allah’s command to actively observe the universe, as He says: “Say: ‘Travel on the earth and observe how Allah began creation…'” (Quran 29:20).
Evolution is unstoppable. We are entering the “Algorithmic Era,” a time when information is no longer sought but delivered by machines. At this point, humans are often presented with fake news, perceived as true because it has gone viral. This is known as post-truth. Amid this deluge of intoxicating information, the Quran has long since prepared a protective shield for our common sense through the principle of tabayyun (checking and rechecking). Allah warns in Quran 49:6 to examine the truth of news brought by wicked people so that we will not regret it later. This warning feels especially urgent in today’s era of digital hoaxes.
As technological leaps bring us to the “Generative AI Era,” where answers are readily available in a matter of seconds, the Quran once again guides us to the essence of knowledge. Wisdom in this era is no longer about accumulating answers, but rather the humility to ask questions. “…so ask those who possess knowledge if you do not know,” is the guidance of Surah An-Nahl [16]: 43. In this era, the quality of our lives is now determined by the quality of the questions (prompts) we ask. And now, we stand at the pinnacle of the visualization of the “Agentic Era.” The image of humans standing proudly directing various robotic agents is not a reflection of human arrogance and self-deification. Rather, this is a chilling moment of realization of Allah’s promise regarding our position as Caliphs. Through the concept of the taskhir, Allah affirms that He is the One who has subjected everything in the heavens and the earth, including the laws of nature that enable the creation of AI, to serve humanity (Surah Al-Jatsiyah [45]: 13).
A Relevant Lawsuit from the Past
Given how precisely the Quran guides every inch of human intellectual development, it is ironic if we run away from it. This is the core concern of the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) lawsuit at the beginning of this article. We are busy questioning AI, but forget to question the Possessor of All Knowledge through His Word. We are fascinated by human-made algorithms, but ignore the algorithms of life designed by the Creator.
Ignoring the Quran at the peak of technological advancement is a form of civilizational suicide. Without the guidance of revelation, super-sophisticated artificial intelligence will only become a tool that accelerates destruction on earth, controlled by humans who have lost their spiritual orientation.
Towards Universal Consciousness: Philosophical, Ecological, Social
So, how do we respond to the challenges of this era so as not to fall into the category complained about by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)? The answer is not to reject technology, but to revive the essence of the Quran in a complete consciousness. We need to reflect on and practice the ideas of Shaykh (peace be upon him). Panji Gumilang on the urgency of building a “Trilogy of Consciousness” to safely navigate this wave of evolution.
These are philosophical awareness, ecological awareness, and social awareness. This is the essence of contemporary education.
First, we absolutely need Philosophical Awareness. This is the foundation for humans in the “Agentic Era.” This awareness demands the ability to think deeply, recognizing that no matter how powerful AI technology is, it is merely a tool subjugated by Allah for us. Philosophical awareness enables us to understand our ontological position as Khalifah (God’s representative) on earth, bearing a mandate, not the land’s owner who can act arbitrarily according to his or her whims.
However, mere intellectual intelligence will be an ivory tower if it is not grounded in Ecological Awareness. As “conductors” of technology guided by revelation, our task is not to exploit nature until it is barren in the name of progress. A conscious Khalifah will use the immense power of AI and technology to heal the ailing earth, maintain the balance of ecosystems, and ensure the sustainability of life for future generations.
Ultimately, both awarenesses must culminate in Social Awareness. This is the ultimate test of our humanity. High philosophical intelligence and ecological concern will be crippled if we fail to care for our fellow human beings. Social awareness guides us to use technology to build bridges of tolerance, spread compassion, and create inclusivity, not to divide or oppress the weak. Because, in essence, the essence of Islam is As-Salam (peace). The evolution of true “smart people,” guided by the Quran, must give birth to a civilization of total peace: peace with the Creator, peace with the universe, and peace with our fellow human beings. Without it, all our intelligence is nothing but a grandiose vanity.***
