Heroes’ CFD Thrills! Hundreds of Junior High School Students Invade Javanese Dance Flashmob with Pepadi Semarang City

SEMARANG-JAYA NEWS.COM — Sunday morning’s Car Free Day on Jalan Pahlawan felt different. The Car Free Day (CFD) area transformed into an open-air cultural stage as hundreds of junior high school students from across Semarang City performed a Javanese dance flashmob, initiated by the Indonesian Puppeteers Association (Pepadi) Semarang City, Sunday (January 25, 2026).

Since 6:30 a.m. Western Indonesian Time, the strains of gamelan music echoed among the footsteps of CFD visitors, accompanying the students’ dynamic and energetic dance moves. This colossal action certainly attracted public attention, presenting a fascinating and rare sight: Javanese dance art present in a public space, alongside the pulse of city life.
This flashmob was more than just a performance.

Behind the traditional dance movements, there was a powerful message about the importance of introducing and preserving culture to the younger generation.

The hundreds of junior high school students who attended and participated symbolized regeneration, demonstrating that Javanese dance still holds a place in the hearts of the younger generation.

The Chairman of Pepadi Semarang City, Dr. H. Anang Budi Utomo, S.Pd., S.Mn., S.H., M.Pd., emphasized that this morning’s activity was a strategic step taken to bring the younger generation closer to Javanese traditional arts, particularly Javanese dance, through a creative approach tailored to their interests.

“This flash mob activity is our effort at Pepadi Semarang City to bring the younger generation closer to dance as a traditional Javanese art. We hope that children will not only learn about the art, but also love it and develop a sense of ownership of it as part of their identity,” said Anang.

According to him, public spaces in Semarang City, such as the CFD, are an effective medium for introducing traditional arts to the younger generation and the wider community, while also dispelling the perception that traditional arts, especially Javanese dance, are only for the older generation or certain groups.

Furthermore, the Chairperson of Pepadi Semarang City, Anang, emphasized Pepadi Semarang City’s commitment to playing an active role in preserving the existence of traditional Indonesian arts. Amidst the rapid development of technology, globalization, and popular culture, Pepadi Semarang City is determined not to stand still.

“Pepadi Semarang City is ready to be at the forefront of preserving, preserving, and developing traditional Indonesian arts. This is a shared responsibility, and we choose to start with the younger generation,” he emphasized.

The enthusiasm of the students in attendance was evident throughout the event. Pepadi Semarang City also invited a group of “Gagakan” dancers to perform the “Sesaji Rajasuya” (Sesaji Rajasuya) performance in full wayang orang costume. Residents on Jalan Pahlawan flocked to the venue and joined in with the dance moves, dancing enthusiastically.

Even female police officers from the Semarang City Police Traffic Unit (Satlantas) participated in a flash mob, dancing and imitating Javanese dance moves in front of the crowd. The sense of togetherness was truly beautiful.

Pepadi Semarang City hopes that activities like this can be held regularly as part of the arts and cultural development and preservation program in Semarang. Such activities are believed to foster a love and pride for culture, while strengthening the character of the younger generation.
Amidst the city’s fast-paced development, today’s Javanese dance flash mob at CFD Pahlawan serves as a powerful reminder that traditions can be embraced by the younger generation and should not be left behind. With creative touches and support from the younger generation, traditional arts, particularly Javanese dance, are finding a new rhythm in Semarang’s public spaces.**
