Indramayu’s Tawangsari Village Holds “Mapag Sri” Harvest Thanksgiving to Preserve Cultural Heritage
INDRAMAYU, West Java – Hundreds of residents in Tawangsari Village, Arahan District, celebrated the annual “Mapag Sri” tradition on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.
“Mapag Sri,” meaning “Welcoming Dewi Sri,” is an agrarian ritual to express gratitude for the rice harvest and to honor Dewi Sri, the Javanese goddess of fertility. The event featured a procession of crop offerings, communal prayers, distribution of harvest produce, and a _wayang kulit_ performance of the Dewi Sri epic, accompanied by traditional _tarling_ and _kentrung_ music.
Village Head Eva Rosyani stated that the tradition serves both as a prayer for a better harvest and as a way to educate younger generations about Indramayu’s customs. In line with this, elementary students and the local youth group, _Karang Taruna_, were fully involved as performers and carriers of the ceremonial _gunungan_ crop display.
Local culturalist Darpan praised the initiative, calling Tawangsari “a model cultural village” for actively preserving local wisdom in the digital era. The Village Government aims to designate Mapag Sri as an annual event and a new cultural tourism attraction for Indramayu.
