National Press Day: When Truth Is Tested in the Age of Viral

National Press Day: When Truth Is Tested in the Age of Viral

By: Dr. Ali Aminulloh, M.Pd.I., M.E.

Every National Press Day, we celebrate the press. But at the same time, we are also faced with a stark paradox: precisely in this era of advanced information technology, truth is often defeated by the noise. What goes viral is considered true, what is silent is considered false. Facts can be crushed by opinion, and clarification often comes after prejudice has already become public belief.

Press Day is not just a historical marker. It is a mirror. Is the press today still the guardian of truth, or is it unwittingly swept away by the post-truth wave, an era where the measure of right and wrong is no longer objectivity, but popularity?

Press, History, and Responsibility

National Press Day is commemorated every February 9th, established by Presidential Decree No. 5 of 1985 by Suharto. This date refers to the birth of the Indonesian Journalists Association on February 9, 1946, in Solo, a moment when the press became a tool of struggle, not just an information industry.

From the beginning, the Indonesian press was born with an ethical mission: to convey the truth, safeguard the public conscience, and stand up for the nation’s interests. Therefore, the theme of the 2026 National Press Day (HPN) “Healthy Press, Sovereign Economy, Strong Nation” is not a ceremonial slogan. It is a reminder that a morally ill press will give birth to a society that is disoriented.

Post-Truth and the Blurring of Right and Wrong

In today’s IT world, right and wrong have become blurred. Social media algorithms work not to seek truth, but to maximize engagement. Emotions are capitalized, anger is sold, and prejudice is mass-produced. This is where post-truth finds its momentum.

The Quran long ago provided ethical guidelines for information:
“Yā ayyuhalladzīna āmanū in jā’akum fāsiqun binaba’in fatabayyanū…”
O you who believe, when news comes to you, examine it thoroughly.

This verse is not only spiritual advice, but also a journalistic principle: verify it before publication. Another verse emphasizes the dangers of prejudice:
“Inna ba‘daẓ-ẓanni ithmun” (Indeed, some prejudice is sinful).
In the context of the press, prejudice is news without fact-checking; it undermines public trust and tears apart the social fabric.

From Press Day to Al-Zaytun: Awareness as a Path

From this reflection on Press Day, the thinking at Ma’had Al-Zaytun found its relevance. Shaykh Al-Zaytun offered what he called a trilogy of awareness as an answer to the chaos of modern information.

First, philosophical awareness: the ability to think deeply, critically, and non-reactively. A philosophical press doesn’t rush to sensationalize.
Second, ecological awareness: understanding that information thrives in a social ecosystem; one misinformation can disrupt shared harmony.
Third, social awareness: sensitivity to impact; that every word broadcast affects the lives of others.

This awareness is reinforced by the teachings of freedom of thought, freedom of spirit, and freedom of knowledge. However, this freedom is not limitless. It is freedom that is responsible, free, but ethical; critical, but civilized.

Juhan and the Meaning of Resilience

The 2026 National Press Day mascot, Juhan (The Reliable Journalist), symbolizes this resilience. The Javan rhinoceros he carries is not merely an icon, but a message: the press must be resilient in the face of pressure, consistently maintain integrity, and never give up on the truth.

Staying Sane Amidst Virality

National Press Day should be a pause, not just a celebration. A pause to ask: are we still fatabayyanu before broadcasting? Are we still holding back prejudice before forming an opinion?

In a world abuzz with virality, the press is challenged to remain sane. Reflecting on Press Day, the values of awareness taught by Al-Zaytun find relevance: the future of the press is determined not by speed, but by wisdom.
