“Wisdom” in the AI Era: Humanity’s Most Valuable Asset

Today’s world no longer simply offers convenience; it is setting a stage for perfect manipulation. Imagine a reality where the eyes can no longer be trusted, and the ears can no longer guarantee the truth. The phenomenon of AI-enabled crime has exploded; from corporate deepfake scams that wiped out Rp 400 billion in an instant to voice cloning that only takes three seconds to fake a family member’s cry for help. With a 1,265% surge in phishing attacks and the use of the faces of state leaders for fraudulent investments, we are at a nadir in information security. This is the dark backdrop that forces us to realize: if we rely solely on technical “smarts,” we are walking toward the brink of a fatal accident.
The Quran warned us long before algorithms were created, in Surah Al-Insyiqaq, verse 19: “Latar-kabunna thabaqan ‘an thabaq”: Indeed, you will go through stages. We are climbing a level of intelligence that is increasingly blurring the boundaries between humans and machines. Previously, in the era of print, “smartness” was about the endurance to devour scriptures (Surah Al-Qalam: 1). Then came the Search era, where intelligence shifted to the ability to navigate and find information (Surah An-Nahl: 43). However, in the era of Algorithms and Generative AI, we are starting to become trapped. We are presented with unfiltered information, even encouraged to become “name-givers” for new concepts (Surah Al-Baqarah: 31). The problem is, when machines begin to act independently as Agentic AI, human intelligence, simply processing data, becomes irrelevant.
Amidst the siege of vulgar deepfakes that undermine dignity and romance scams that destroy hearts and wealth, the only remaining stronghold is Wisdom. The Quran affirms: “Whoever is given wisdom has indeed been given much good” (Quran, Al-Baqarah: 269). Wisdom is not just knowing how to use AI, but knowing when to doubt it. Wisdom is the ability to “see” with the eyes of the heart when the physical eye is presented with a fake video, to “hear” with the conscience when the ear is presented with a cloned voice, and to “respond” with calmness (tabayyun) when the finger itches to press the send button or transfer money.
This is why we must be wise in managing information.
Without Wisdom, every WhatsApp message is a potential trap, every video is a potential slander, and every piece of data is a potential disaster. Wisdom teaches us to put things in their proper place (Wadh’u syai’in fi mahallihi). In a future filled with autonomous AI agents, the world no longer needs humans who are simply quick to respond, but humans who are deeply reflective.
Technology is “pushing” us away from technical tasks, returning us to our natural state as caliphs. We are being forced to stop being biological robots that can only react and start becoming human beings capable of providing value. Intelligence alone is no longer enough; in the face of agentic AI that can falsify everything, only the clarity of wisdom can save us from mistakes and life’s mishaps. If you compete with AI in speed, you lose. But if you stand as the holder of Al-Hikmah (the giver of meaning), you are the owner of the most valuable treasure that can never be falsified by any algorithm.**
