BANJAR VILLAGES IN CIANJUR, WEST JAVA

There are several villages or areas in Cianjur associated with the “Banjar Tribe,” particularly related to the history of Prince Hidayatullah’s exile from the Banjar Sultanate. These include Kampung Banjar (now Jalan Yos Soedarso), where he was exiled and actively preached, and Kampung Banjar Pinang in Cugenang, which was affected by the earthquake. These villages are part of the history of resistance against the Dutch and the spread of Islam in Cianjur, and even contain the ancestral burial site of the Sultan of Banjar.
Key Locations and History:
Kampung Banjar (Jalan Yos Soedarso): This is where Prince Hidayatullah was exiled by the Dutch for 42 years and actively spread Islam, known as the “Great Scholar in the Yellow Robe.”
Banjar Pinang Village, Cugenang: This is a residential area for Banjar residents who were directly affected by the 2022 Cianjur earthquake and needed to be evacuated to a safe post.
Connection to the Banjar Sultanate:
Prince Hidayatullah was the Sultan of Banjar who was exiled to Cianjur, so he and his descendants have strong historical ties to Cianjur.
His legacy can still be felt through the Islamic boarding schools he founded and family tombs in Cianjur, such as the tomb of Prince Hidayatullah himself.
Therefore, “Banjar Village in Cianjur” refers to the historical areas where the exiled Sultan of Banjar lived and spread his influence, as well as where other Banjar residents live. ***
