The Tragic Chapter of the Educator: When the Duty of Educating Ends Behind Bars
Teachers’ Day, which falls every November 25, is truly a moment to praise and honor unsung heroes. However, amidst the celebration, we cannot turn a blind eye to the acute problems looming over educators in Indonesia. The line between educating firmly and violating children’s rights to protection has become very thin and risky.
The noble function of a teacher, which is supposed to guide and discipline, now often results in legal vulnerability. We witness teachers forced to face justice simply for carrying out their educational duties. The heartbreaking stories of principals languishing in prison (such as the viral case in Sulawesi that required presidential clemency) and the principal in Banten who was fired for reprimanding a student for smoking are clear evidence of the fragile position of teachers. Not to mention the series of students’ transgressive actions against teachers, which seem to underscore the erosion of ethics and respect.
Ironically, when teachers try to take a firm stance, they face the threat of a counter-report in the name of the Child Protection Law. This is no longer simply a matter of pedagogy, but also a matter of protecting the guardians of civilization itself.
Welfare A Long Way Off: Limited State Recognition
Enhancing the nation’s intellectual life is a noble mandate of the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution, in which teachers play a key role. The old adage holds true that two people whose advice should never be disregarded are teachers and doctors. They are the guardians of the nation’s mind and body.
However, state recognition of the services and role of teachers remains far from adequate. We witness thousands of honorary education workers paid less than Rp 300,000 per month, far below the Regional Minimum Wage (UMR). This contrasts with developed countries like Denmark, New Zealand, and Finland, which prioritize educator welfare at the highest level, making the teaching profession one of the most respected and promising. This disparity in treatment seems to hinder teachers from fully focusing on improving themselves and their noble duties.
The Calling of Educators: The Teacher’s Identity as Architect of Civilization
Despite being buffeted by vulnerabilities and limitations, teachers must not give up. The future of the nation, a Golden Indonesia, rests on the foundations laid by educators. It is time to return to the essence and identity of teachers: not merely transferring knowledge, but instilling awareness, fostering humanity, and building civilization.
The role of teachers is that of true heroes, mentors, motivators, and inspirations that endure with time. In the past, chalk and a blackboard were sufficient; now, they are required to adapt to disruptive technology, the challenges of the digital era, and the diverse needs of 21st-century students. Their dedication and commitment are a never-ending wellspring.
Laying the Foundations of Civilization: Real Steps to Improve Your Quality
Limitations should not be an excuse for stasis. As an invitation to move forward, educational institutions must take proactive initiatives.
One concrete example is Ma’had Al Zaytun’s efforts to improve the quality of its educators. They continuously conduct student training by bringing in professors weekly to prepare them for modern, contemporary education in the 21st century.

The challenges of technological change, the digital divide, and the demands of 21st-century skills are your battleground. Remember, you have the full support of your parents and the community who believe in your dedication.
