The discovery of the Stegodon ancient elephant fossil in East Java, specifically in Tritik Forest, Nganjuk, has captured the attention of the archaeology world. This fossil is estimated to be around 800,000 years old and is one of the most anatomically complete ancient elephant fossils found in East Java.

Significance: This discovery could form the basis for the development of a prehistoric geopark in Nganjuk and confirms the potential of the Tritik Forest as an important geological area on the island of Java.
Further excavation of this fossil is being carried out by a team from the Bandung Geological Museum, in collaboration with the Nganjuk Regency Youth, Sports, Culture, and Tourism Office, and the Kota Angin Community. The current priority is the rescue and conservation of the fossil.
The Stegodon fossil in Nganjuk, East Java, was discovered in 2024, but further excavation will begin in October 2025. The excavation will last for 10 days, starting on October 13, 2025, and is expected to be completed on October 22, 2025.**
