WB PKBM Al Zaytun’s Inspiration: Learning Regardless of Age, Life Becomes More Colorful

The clock showed 10:40 a.m. In the bazaar area, the atmosphere was still lively: bustling, warm, and full of energy. But what most captured the attention wasn’t just the crowd, but the waves of laughter erupting from a classroom. Honest, free-spirited, and… infectious.
There, the students at PKBM Al Zaytun, no longer young, went about their day. Not with tense faces, but with a natural flow of enthusiasm. Some laughed during the icebreaker, others intently listened to the tutor’s explanation, some bravely presented, and still others immersed themselves in practical skills. Everyone moved in one rhythm: learning happily.
In class B2, during the last hour of Indonesian language class, tutor Sri Wahyuni encouraged students to understand experimental report texts. Material that might have sounded stiff on paper came alive in their hands. The discussion of objectives, tools and materials, steps, and conclusions was not merely theoretical, but directly touched on everyday practice.
The example used was simple: making salted eggs. From the traditional technique using a mixture of salt, ash, and clay, to the process of sanding the eggshells, everything was explained in a coherent manner. But interestingly, the learning didn’t stop there.
Suddenly, a voice from the students’ benches broke the ice. Mrs. Ngasrini enthusiastically interjected,
“Usth, I saw a new method on YouTube… using boiled salt water, then soaking it in a jar for 7 days. The results are great.”
Instantly, the classroom transformed into a discussion space. This was no longer one-way learning. It was proof that learning knows no age limit, nor is it confined to the classroom. The technology in their hands was not merely entertainment, but a window to knowledge that continues to open.
It was at that point that it became clear: their enthusiasm for learning was not an obligation, but a necessity.
The activity continued. The students were divided into two groups. The first group made flowers from cloth or headscarves for wall decorations, while the second group arranged flowers from tissue paper for table decorations or gifts. Initially, there was hesitation, “Can I do this? I’ve never made one before…”
But that doubt slowly faded. Their stiff hands began to move. Their droopy eyes brightened. Even Mrs. Kasinem, who had been sleepy, suddenly regained her vigor once the practical work began.
The classroom wasn’t just a learning space, but a living space.
After completing their work, they wrote a report on their experiments. It didn’t have to be perfect. Even if the results weren’t as expected, they were encouraged to honestly describe any obstacles. Because that’s where the real learning lies.
And when everyone was finished, the atmosphere turned into a small celebration. Laughter erupted again. They took photos with their creations: proud, satisfied, and happy. Some said lightly,
“I’ll make another one at home tomorrow.”
Simple. But deeply meaningful.
