Cipancuh Reservoir: Hidden Tourism Potential

In the distance, the light footsteps of pedestrians blended with the serene sounds of nature. Who would have thought that in a corner of Indramayu, such a captivating tourism potential lurks: Cipancuh Reservoir.
Located in Situraja Village, Gantar District, Indramayu, West Java, Cipancuh Reservoir, more familiarly known as “wadukan” by locals, is more than just an ordinary expanse of water. Built in 1927 during the Dutch East Indies era, this reservoir covers an area of approximately 700 hectares and is a vital pillar of life for the surrounding community.
Its primary function is to irrigate agricultural land in the Gantar and Haurgeulis Districts. It is from here that the rice fields derive their livelihood, and it is on this that their harvests depend. This reservoir is not just about water, but about the hopes of the farmers.
However, beyond its vital function, the Cipancuh Reservoir holds another charm that has yet to be fully tapped. The vast expanse of water, the tranquil atmosphere, and the eye-catching panorama make it a highly potential tourist destination. Every day, local residents use this area for light exercise like jogging or simply taking a leisurely stroll to enjoy the fresh air—a free experience that soothes the soul.
Along the creek and the area around the reservoir, small economic activities are starting to grow. Vendors selling food, clothing, and traditional snacks line the streets, especially during holidays. Every Sunday, the area becomes even more lively. Visitors come, bringing their families, to enjoy the simple yet meaningful atmosphere.
My wife and I, on Sunday, March 29, 2026, included us. We took a leisurely walk along the edge of the reservoir, doing some “okeke” (footwork) without tickets, without the hustle and bustle of the city, just tranquility and togetherness.
Unfortunately, this enormous potential remains underdeveloped. With professional management, the Cipancuh Reservoir could become a leading destination that can stimulate the local economy.
“Even without proper management, many people are already earning a living. Especially if it’s managed professionally, not only will the local government receive income, the economy will also grow, and the community will feel the benefits,” said Dewi Asih Nusantari.
Hope flows, as calm as the waters of the vast reservoir. Hopefully, the Indramayu Regency Government will be moved to recognize and develop this hidden potential. Because, beneath its serenity, the Cipancuh Reservoir holds a promising future.**
