Do Humans Truly Learn From Time or Just Pass Through It?

Do Humans Truly Learn From Time or Just Pass Through It?

(Reflection on the Commemoration of January 8th)

By: Ali Aminuloh

If days are merely changing numbers on the calendar, why did Allah present the qisahs in His book? Aren’t stories told so that humans can be like Abraham, who dared to ask questions, reflect, and then find certainty through reason and faith? “Indeed, in their stories there are lessons for those who understand the truth” (Quran, 1:11). And “Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of night and day, there are signs for those who understand the truth” (Quran, 1:190).

January 8th is not just a time marker. It is a showcase of meaning, a place where the past reflects to rebuke the future. Below are some important events that occurred on January 8th:

Earth Rotation Day reminds us of the courage of human reason. In 1851, Léon Foucault demonstrated that the Earth rotates on its axis. A pendulum swings, and the world acknowledges: the universe is moving. The question is, are our minds spinning along with it, or are they frozen in place?

World Typing Day seems simple, but it is a symbol of the times. Fingers dancing on a keyboard can spread goodness or noise. In an era of information overload, the ethics of writing are an act of reason: choosing words, preserving meaning, weighing impact.

National Nurses Day lights the light of humanity. Behind the silence of the treatment room, there is sincerity working without the spotlight of cameras. They care not only for bodies, but also for hopes. This serves as a reminder that true professionalism always meets empathy.

The Indonesian Air Force’s Anniversary affirms the meaning of sovereignty. Since 1946, the Indonesian Air Force has guarded the skies of the archipelago. The sky is not just space, but a trust, where courage, discipline, and devotion are tested.

World Coffee Day invites pause. A cup of coffee is more than just a taste; it is conversation, creativity, and the honesty of time. In a warm sip, humans slowly learn that reflection is often born from silence.

And Elvis Presley Day carries cultural resonance. Elvis Presley, born January 8, 1935, taught us that works can transcend generations. Voices may fade, but their influence lives on, if authenticity is maintained.

Reflection:
January 8 teaches us one thing: time is not neutral. It tests whether we read the signs or turn a blind eye. Stories of the past are not nostalgia; they are a compass. Ulul albab reads events, then moves, his mind turns, his heart grows. So, today, what do we learn to make tomorrow more meaningful?
