Prof. Dr. Sutan Nasomal Welcomes Press Council’s Start to Defend Journalists and Hopes Bekasi Journalists Case Will Be Considered!!!
JAKARTA-JAYA NEWS.COM – Prof. Dr. Sutan Nasomal, SH, MH, has asked the Chairman of the Indonesian Press Council to take action to uncover the assault case of journalist Diri Ambarita in Bekasi so that the world of journalism can be bright and bright, no longer shrouded in darkness as it has been for decades,” said Prof. Dr. Sutan Nasomal, an international criminal law expert and economist, answering questions from print and online editors abroad at his office at the headquarters of the opposition Merdeka Party in Jakarta via cell phone on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
The assault on Ambarita, which resulted in blindness in her left eye and other serious injuries, is a heinous act that not only physically injured the victim but also violates the principles of press freedom and democracy in Indonesia.
We emphasize that acts of violence against journalists are an attack on press freedom, as guaranteed by Law No. 40 of 1999 concerning the Press. The state is obliged to provide protection and ensure that any perpetrators of violence are prosecuted fairly and transparently.
1. Support the steps taken by the Indonesian Journalists Committee, which has assisted the victim in filing a report. Officially report this case to the Jakarta Metropolitan Police.
2. Urge the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Chief to prioritize this case and immediately arrest and prosecute all perpetrators without discrimination.
3. Strongly condemn the intimidation, discrimination, and criminalization of journalists, which clearly violate the Press Law and human rights.
4. Demand maximum protection for the victim and other journalists carrying out their professional duties in the field.
5. Remind law enforcement officers not to succumb to pressure from any party attempting to obscure or undermine the legal process.
6. Emphasize that this incident is inconsistent with the President and the National Police Chief’s vision of promoting a clean, fair, and public-interest police transformation.
“Attacks on journalists are attacks on democracy. The Indonesian Journalists Committee stands firmly with Ambar and all journalists working for the truth.”
Sincerely, Chairman of the Indonesian Journalists Committee
Central Executive Board
