AUGUST 17, 1945 : THE BIRTH OF INDONESIA

August 17, 1945: The Birth of Indonesia.

From Diversity to Unity, From Nation to World.

August 17, 1945, is not merely a date on the calendar.
It marks the birth of a nation—the day Indonesia resolved to stand on its own.

In the past, we were united by a shared spirit despite our differences—differences in ethnicity, language, island, and belief. Yet, on that day, all those differences were forged into a single name: Indonesia.

1. Independence: Standing on Our Own Two Feet.

The Proclamation was a declaration of independence—not just freedom from colonizers, but the freedom to think and the freedom to determine our own destiny.
“Standing on our own” means we no longer wait to be told what is right or wrong. We learn, we question, and we decide together.

2. From Diversity to Unity.

Indonesia was born of diversity: 17,000 islands, 700 languages, and hundreds of cultures.
Yet, the nation’s founders understood that diversity was not meant to be a source of conflict, but a foundation for unity.
*Bhinneka Tunggal Ika*—diverse, yet one.
Unity does not mean uniformity. Unity means respecting our differences and moving forward together toward a shared goal: a just and prosperous nation.

3. A Greater Vision: The Unity of Humanity.

The spirit of August 17th does not stop at national borders.
Ultimately, we are all one: human inhabitants of planet Earth.
Nations can unite not because they must be identical, but because they share the same values: humanity, justice, and mutual respect.

In this internet age, a village in Indramayu can converse with a village in Africa. Farmers can learn from scientists in Europe. We can combat hoaxes together.
This is a new form of unity: a unity of information and a unity of hearts.

Conclusion: Fulfilling the Promise of Independence.

The independence of 1945 was won through the shedding of blood. Independence in 2026 is our task: to enrich it with knowledge.
Internet-savvy villages and information-literate citizens are the tangible embodiment of independence.
For an independent nation is one that cannot be easily deceived or divided, and one that dares to speak up for the truth.

Happy 81st Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia.
Merdeka!
