Indonesia’s Location Poses Potential for Frequent Natural Disasters

Indonesia frequently experiences natural disasters due to its location at the meeting point of three tectonic plates: the Eurasian, Indo-Australian, and Pacific plates. This has the potential to trigger major disasters such as floods, landslides, extreme weather, and volcanic eruptions.
*Natural Disasters in Indonesia 2025*
– Floods were the dominant type of disaster in Indonesia, with a total of 441 cases throughout 2025.
– Extreme weather was also a significant disaster, with a total of 108 cases recorded during the same period.
– Landslides followed with 59 recorded incidents.
– Karhutla (forest and land fires) recorded 26 incidents, three incidents of tidal waves and abrasion, and two incidents of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
*Impact of Natural Disasters*
– 7,181 houses were damaged, consisting of 5,379 with minor damage, 1,005 with moderate damage, and 797 with severe damage.
– 68 facilities were damaged, consisting of 42 educational institutions, 19 houses of worship, and 7 health care facilities.
– 110 people died, 17 people are missing, 121 people were injured, and 2,245,787 people were affected and displaced.
*Disaster Mitigation Strategy*
Indonesia must prepare appropriate emergency and mitigation strategies to deal with disasters, given its status as the country with the second highest risk of natural disasters.***
