JAKARTA-JAYA NEWS.COM – International Law and Economics expert, Prof. Dr. KH. Sutan Nasomal, SH., M.H., emphasized that attacks on journalists constitute serious violations of human rights and press freedom.
According to him, these actions not only violate criminal law but also violate the basic principles of democracy and the rule of law, which guarantee freedom of expression and the public’s right to accurate and balanced information.
“These actions not only violate criminal law, but also violate the basic principles of democracy,” he added.
“Journalists play a vital role in conveying public information, so the state is obliged to protect them from all forms of intimidation and violence,” said Prof. Sutan Nasomal.
He added that the state must also ensure psychological recovery for the child victims and firm law enforcement against the perpetrators, to prevent similar incidents from happening again in the future.
“This incident is a test for law enforcement officials to demonstrate professionalism and a commitment to truth and justice,” he stressed.
Furthermore, Prof. Sutan Nasomal, S.H., M.H., requested that the Aceh Regional Police Chief immediately order the Central Aceh Police Chief to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged assault case perpetrated by a village official.
“If there are witnesses to the assault, they must be prosecuted under multiple articles. Moreover, the perpetrators are civil servants who should be protecting the community, not brutally assaulting them,” said Prof. Sutan Nasomal during a telephone interview at the Merdeka Opposition Party Headquarters in Jakarta, Saturday (18/10/2025).
Prof. Sutan Nasomal, S.H., M.H., also emphasized the importance of transparency in the legal process and protection for the victims’ families to maintain public trust in law enforcement. The state, he said, must be present to ensure that every citizen—especially members of the press—feels safe in carrying out their profession.
Chronology of the Incident
An attack occurred at the home of a local media journalist in Kuyun Uken Village, Celala District, Central Aceh Regency, on Monday, October 7, 2025, at approximately 7:30 a.m. Western Indonesian Time.
The perpetrator of the attack is suspected to be a Village Head with the initials A. The attack occurred at the journalist’s home and caused psychological trauma for the four children present at the scene.
The four children who suffered trauma are:
1. Muhamad Alfarezi (3.5 years old)
2. Ahmad Yuda (7 years old)
3. Diandra Alfirian (11 years old)
4. Suci Anastasya Futri (14 years old)
Following the incident, the children experienced psychological problems such as fear, difficulty sleeping, and excessive anxiety about their parents’ safety.
“We are very worried about the children’s condition. They are frightened and unable to calm down whenever they hear loud noises. We hope the police will pursue this case fairly,” said one of the victim’s family members.
The family hopes that relevant institutions, including the Regional Government, the Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Agency (DP3A), and social psychology institutions, will immediately provide trauma healing support for the children.
Response from Journalist Organizations
This incident has received widespread attention from the press in Central Aceh. Several journalist organizations believe that this act of violence against journalists violates Law Number 40 of 1999 concerning the Press and undermines press freedom and democratic values in the region.
“Violence against journalists cannot be tolerated in any form. We urge law enforcement officials to immediately prosecute the perpetrators and provide protection to the victim’s family,” stated a representative of a local journalist organization.
The police are expected to conduct a transparent and professional investigation and ensure the safety of the victim’s family from potential further threats. The public is also urged to exercise restraint and entrust the resolution of this case to the legal process.**
