H. Purnomo, Deputy Treasurer of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Indramayu for the 2025-2030 term, is one of the many public figures who received the 9th “PWI Indramayu Award” in 2026 in the “Young Entrepreneur” category, representing the millennial generation (those born between 1981 and 1996).

He received the award inaugurally on stage at the commemoration of National Press Day (HPN) and the 80th anniversary of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) in the Ballroom of the Swiss Bell Hotel in Indramayu (Thursday, February 6, 2026). Congratulations!

The question is, who is so “sexy” and interesting about H. Purnomo that he deserves to be included in the ranks of the Indramayu MUI (term of service 2025-2030) and to receive the 9th “PWI Indramayu Award” in 2026 in the “Young Entrepreneur” category?

In the literature of Javanese political sociology, at least in the construction of Clifford Geezt’s classic and monumental research in his book “Religion of Java” (1956) on the variants of Santri, Abangan, and Priyayi, H. Purnomo falls into the “santri” category.

He studied at Islamic boarding schools, including Mts NU Putera Buntet and MAN Buntet in Cirebon, West Java. Buntet is one of the “historical” and “iconic” Islamic boarding schools within the NU pesantren heritage on Java. He subsequently completed his undergraduate degree in social sciences.

In this context, he is worthy of being included in the ranks of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in Indramayu, as a Buntet alumni santri. Throughout its history, the MUI served as a forum for “santri” from diverse Islamic perspectives, with diverse professional backgrounds and political affiliations.

H. Purnomo’s success in the business world at a young age, under 40, includes serving as President Commissioner of PT. Pandita Jasa Prima, President Director of PT. Waskita Jaya Purnama, President Director of PT. Muara Jati, Owner & Founder of Taruna Beton (Balongan), and Owner of Taruna Coffie & Resto, among others.

In this context, he is highly compatible and more than deserving of an award from the “PWI Indramayu Award” as a successful “Young Entrepreneur” with a resilient character and a background in Islamic boarding school (santri).

H. Purnomo’s entrepreneurial spirit is crucial to instill in the social ecosystem of Indramayu’s younger generation. The award H. Purnomo received from the “PWI Indramayu Award” in the category of Young Figures Driving the Regional Economy may serve as a driving inspiration.

This is crucial for Indramayu. The social problems of poverty and social fragility cannot be addressed by the Indramayu Regional Government alone, except through the role of the business community and the independent character of its citizens. This is where H. Purnomo’s award becomes meaningful.

In the context of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), this is one way to “ground” the doctrines of “heaven” into the path of “benefit” (benefit) “fil Ardhi” (benefit) on earth, a responsibility of the “caliphate” of the MUI Indramayu in its organic role.
