Mahakam Dolphin Appears in Rokan River, Rokan Hulu Regent Urges Residents to Protect Its Conservation
ROHUL-JAYA NEWS.COM – Good news has arrived from the waters of the Rokan River. Recently, several photos and videos went viral on social media showing the appearance of a rare aquatic mammal, the Pesut (Freshwater Dolphin), around Surau Munai Village, Rokan Hulu Regency. The appearance of this animal, known as an indicator of the health of the river ecosystem, immediately attracted attention and sparked public enthusiasm.
In response to this extraordinary natural phenomenon, the Regent of Rokan Hulu, H. Anton, ST, MM, immediately issued a firm appeal to all levels of the Rokan Hulu community.
Regent Anton emphasized that the public should not attempt to catch or harm the fish, but rather work together to preserve its sustainability. This appeal is not without basis, as the Irrawaddy Dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) is a protected species under Law Number 5 of 1990 concerning the Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and their Ecosystems.
“This is a blessing and a good sign for our Rokan River. I emphasize to the entire community that this Irrawaddy Dolphin is a protected animal by the state. Let us protect and preserve it together; there should be no capture or hunting. Let them live sustainably in their habitat,” said Regent Anton on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.
The appearance of Irrawaddy Dolphins in the Rokan River is expected to serve as a momentum to raise awareness of environmental conservation and keep the river clean from pollution.
In addition to the appeal regarding the protection of endangered species, Regent Anton also reminded the public to always be cautious considering the current weather conditions.
Given the ongoing rainy season, the water flow in the Rokan River tends to increase. Therefore, Regent Anton urged the public to reduce river activities and remain vigilant for the potential dangers of flooding or strong currents, especially those living along river banks.
“Safety is paramount. Reduce river activities for the time being and always monitor weather information. We hope that all Rokan Hulu residents remain safe and healthy,” he concluded. (Kominfo/JK).
