MALAYU TRIBE (MINANGKABAU CLAN)

Malayu is one of the tribes (clans) within the Minangkabau ethnic social order. This tribe generally adheres to the Lareh Koto Piliang tradition, but some also combine both Minangkabau customary systems, namely Lareh Koto Piliang and Lareh Bodi Chaniago (depending on the nagari they reside in), which can be considered part of Lareh Nan Panjang. This tribe, along with the Sipisang tribe, is known to be a splinter group from the Jambak tribe.
The name Malayu is taken from the Malayu kingdom, founded in 644 AD on the banks of the Batanghari River near Jambi, which is written as MO LO YU in itsing records and Chinese chronicles. The Malayu kingdom was the forerunner of the Malayupura, Dharmasraya, and Pagaruyung kingdoms.
The Malays differ from the Malays of the Malacca kingdom on the peninsula. The Malays use the Minang language and Minang matrilineal customs, while the Malays use a high-E accent, as seen in the film Upin Ipin, and patrilineal customs.**
