Since 1526, ancient Banjar split into two:

-Modern Banjar (Islamic) as subjects of the Sultanate Banjar

-The Meratus Dayak, those who were reluctant to abandon their traditional customs and beliefs, refused to convert to Islam like their fellow tribesmen. Therefore, they separated themselves and lived a nomadic life in the hills, practicing shifting cultivation. They were once called “hill people,” but in the 2000s, they were included as a Dayak sub-tribe, the Meratus Dayak.**
