Clear Mind, Sound Mental Health: Key to Managing Diabetes with Healthy Mind and Brain

MOJOWARNO JOMBANG-JAYA NEWS.COM – The Diabetic Club of Mojowarno Christian Hospital held an educational meeting on Saturday (12/13/2025), featuring Dr. Novelita Mesah, SpKJ, a psychiatrist.

The event, themed “Clear Mind, Sound Mental Health: Exercises for Mind and Brain for Diabetics,” provided important insights into the relationship between mental health and diabetes.

Diabetes and Mental Health

In her presentation, Dr. Novelita explained several factors that make diabetes patients vulnerable to sadness.

“Diabetes is a long-term disease that requires strict control. Fluctuating blood sugar levels can affect brain hormones,” she said.

Other contributing factors include fear of complications, limitations in activities, sleep disorders, and lack of family support.

Depression in Diabetics
Based on research presented by Dr. Novelita, approximately 20-25 percent of type 2 diabetes patients experience depression.

This condition has serious impacts as patients tend to be non-compliant with treatment, which ultimately worsens blood sugar control.

Furthermore, Dr. Novelita explained that diabetes can cause damage to brain blood vessels, triggering brain cell damage. This condition subsequently leads to decreased cognitive function, such as declining memory.

Problem-Solving Strategies

Dr. Novelita outlined several important steps to maintain mental and cognitive health in diabetes patients:

Blood Sugar Control

Following treatment according to doctor’s recommendations is a fundamental step in diabetes management.

Mental Health

Awareness Routine screening for mood symptoms such as depression and monitoring of cognitive function should be conducted regularly.

Healthy Lifestyle

Adopting a healthy lifestyle is key to long-term diabetes management.
Cognitive Stimulation Brain exercises can be done through light puzzles such as word guessing, letter arrangement, and word chains. Nostalgic storytelling, such as recounting youth experiences or continuing stories with friends, is also effective for training cognitive function.

Mental Exercises

Practicing deep breathing exercises, positive affirmations, and writing gratitude journals can help maintain mental health.

Courage to Seek Help
Concluding her presentation, Dr. Novelita emphasized the importance of social and professional support.

“Seeking friends to share with and asking for professional help is not a sign of weakness, but proof that we are brave enough to take care of ourselves and choose to remain strong,” she affirmed.

By implementing these various strategies, it is hoped that diabetes patients can achieve clear mental health and sound minds, enabling them to manage their condition more effectively.**
